What to Look for in a Peptide COA: A Researcher's Verification Checklist

Why COA Quality Matters

For researchers, a Certificate of Analysis is the primary document establishing compound identity and purity. But not all COAs are created equal. A COA generated in-house by the same company synthesizing the product carries fundamentally different evidentiary weight than one issued by an independent third-party ISO-certified laboratory.

The research peptide market has grown rapidly, and with it, the number of vendors providing COAs that look credible but lack independent verification. Knowing how to evaluate a COA is a core sourcing skill for any serious researcher.

What a Research-Grade COA Must Contain

• Independent laboratory identification: The issuing lab's name, address, and accreditation status. ISO 17025 is the relevant standard for testing laboratories
• Lot or batch number: Traceable back to the specific synthesis run. A COA without a lot number cannot be verified to correspond to the product you received
• HPLC purity data: Specific percentage purity from high-performance liquid chromatography, not a range or estimate. The chromatogram should ideally be available
• Mass spectrometry confirmation: Confirming molecular weight matches the expected compound structure — this is identity verification, not just purity
• Appearance and physical description: Lyophilized powder characteristics, color, and reconstitution notes
• Endotoxin testing results: Particularly important for injectable research applications — EU/mg values should be explicitly stated
• Sterility results: Positive/negative result with testing methodology noted

Red Flags in Vendor COA Documentation

• COA issued by the vendor itself rather than an independent lab
• No lot number or batch traceability
• Purity stated as a range rather than a specific value
• Missing mass spectrometry data — purity alone doesn't confirm identity
• No endotoxin data on compounds intended for in vivo research use
• Date discrepancies between the COA and the shipment
